How International Students Can Apply to Comenius University Bratislava?

Comenius University Bratislava is the only higher education institution in Slovakia that consistently ranks among the top universities in Europe and worldwide. We welcome students from all over the globe, including international applicants. Here you can find out how international students can apply to our university.

WHAT CAN YOU STUDY?

Comenius University is the largest and oldest university in Slovakia, with a history dating back to 1919. We offer a wide range of bachelor, master, and doctoral programs across 13 faculties, covering humanities, natural sciences, medical fields, and various specialized disciplines. There are 724 academic programmes.

The faculty pages contain all information on study programmes, including lists of courses available at our university. This information includes application deadlines and open days organized by the faculties.

IN WHAT LANGUAGES CAN YOU STUDY?

At Comenius University, instruction is available in Slovak and in English. Some programmes taught in English, such as medicine, management, and law, are subject to tuition fees, while others, including biology, chemistry, environmental and natural sciences, as well as European studies, are offered free of charge. The English-language courses primarily cater to international students who do not speak Slovak. More information about available English-language programmes can be found on the university's website.

Additionally, the Faculty of Management also offers courses in French and German. Importantly, students can study in Slovak for free at all faculties.

To enrol in programmes taught in English, German, or French, a certificate demonstrating proficiency in the respective language is required. For Slovak-language programs, an official certificate is not necessary, but a proficiency level of B2 is expected.

WHEN TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION?

The admission process at Comenius University is straightforward and students are able to complete it without the help of external agencies, which are not supported by the university. The admission campaign typically begins in early January; however, each faculty sets its own application deadlines. Detailed information on application deadlines at each faculty can be found on the university's website.

For some programmes, applications can only be submitted at the beginning of the year, while other faculties offer additional opportunities to apply during the summer. Some programmes do not require admission examinations, whereas others have mandatory exams, depending on the specific programme and faculty.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION?

The admission process at Comenius University begins by filling out an online application form. Before completing the application, you must register on the AiS2 portal. To facilitate the application process, the university provides detailed instructions here: Application Submission Instructions.

As part of your application, you will need to provide the following documents:

  1. Application form
  2. Proof of payment of the application fee
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. Motivation letter
  5. Proof of recognition of secondary education, a certified copy of a diploma equivalence decision, or a nostrification document (unless an international agreement states otherwise)

Please be aware that some faculties may require additional documents, so it is essential to check the specific requirements for your chosen programme.

After filling out the application form, remember to upload all the required documents in the system, including proof of payment, your CV, and your motivation letter. You can pay the application fee using the QR code generated by the system after submitting your application.

Once you have saved and uploaded all the required documents, you will receive an invitation to the admission exam. If there are no entrance exams for your program, you will directly receive an invitation to enrol in your studies.

DOCUMENT RECOGNITION

One of the first steps for international students wishing to enrol in a Slovak higher education institution is the nostrification of their school diploma. Nostrifaction is the procedure for the official recognition of foreign educational documents, confirming their compliance with the standards of the Slovak educational system. A detailed guide on the recognition process and links to necessary resources can be found on the university’s website at the following link: Guide. This process usually takes about a month, and it is advisable to start it in advance.
